Woodend Arts Association (WAA) is a Scottish registered charity which aims to promote the arts and artistic activity on Deeside. It is a largely voluntary organisation with some 150 members and just five part-time staff. Our Patrons are Paul Anderson, George Donald, Evelyn Glennie OBE and Graeme Wilson MBE. With support from the Scottish Arts Council (SAC), Aberdeenshire Council and the
Esmee Fairbairn Foundation amongst others, WAA has developed the Woodend Barn into a flexible performing arts space which includes the Lang Byre Gallery, a small but beautiful space for visual art exhibitions and art & craft workshops.
There is no guaranteed funding to support WAA's operating costs which are in the region of £40k per annum. Through a high level of local support a diverse arts programme has developed. A network of affiliates has grown, allowing volunteers to support and manage the areas which hold most resonance for them.
WAA holds a sixty year lease on Woodend Barn. It provides, maintains and manages the Barn and Gallery arts spaces and also organises some events and workshops whilst other events at the Barn are staged by the affiliated groups. Annually, the Barn events include classical concerts, dance performances, opera and theatre productions from both local and national companies, traditional and folk music and art and craft workshops as well as a number of folk music session nights, storytelling, writing and poetry workshops. Children’s theatre, puppet shows and arts and crafts workshops have also proved very popular. In addition, the Lang Byre Gallery hosts 5 or 6 visual art exhibitions each year, including collaborations with local schools, art colleges and artists associations.
